Moundbuilders, whose works are among the most impressive prehistoric remains of North America, occupied the Mississippi basin and adjacent regions of North America. The mounds were religious structures and these communities also engaged in regional trade networks for items such as copper, shells and obsidian. Mound-building cultures had already disappeared by the time Europeans arrived in the 16th century.
